On October 13-14, 2017- Danza Orgánica will be premiering a new piece: Melaza. This dance work isbased on Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and their diasporic experience with the United States. Marsha Parrilla was born and raised in the island of Puerto Rico, and migrated to the USA in 1998.
Melaza explores stories of PR as a colonized nation, and how the political situation in the USA in terms of Blackness, gender, and language impacts the culture of the island, propelling its constant diasporic status. We explore the current relationship between PR and the USA, and key historical moments that have shaped Puerto Rico, and its current chaotic status.
The company cast is comprised of people from: Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Spain, Japan, and the United States. We all share stories of migration, which are reflected on the work.
