Danza Orgánica is proud to present a series of dance movies created by all members of Danza Orgánica and Proyecto Melaza during 2020! The series begins this Saturday and will be running for a week. Through this series the artists reflect upon colonialism, decolonization, racism, and our current pandemic. For example, Andrea Muñíz reflects upon the impact of the first Spanish settlement (Caparra) in Borikén, while Antonio Hernández del Toro invokes via ritual the brilliance and resilience from Borikén's Taíno ancestors when they faced the colonizers. Other offerings include Danza Orgánica's exploration of what it means to migrate to the USA from colonized Borikén, while all DO and Proyecto Melaza members reflect upon what this year of the pandemic has meant to them.
The full programming is quite rich, and we invite you to see what each of the 12 artists has to share with you throughout this series!
Please note that there will be a virtual Opening and Closing Q&A with DO and Proyecto Melaza artists on Saturday 12/12 and Sunday 12/20 at 8PM (ET).

MELAZA: Descolonizando Historias

Melaza: Decolonizing Stories / Descolonizando Historias, is being created in collaboration with Puerto Rico-based artists. The creative residencies take place in Boston and Puerto Rico, with a world premiere of the final work on the Summer 2021, in Boston and Puerto Rico.
To learn more about this work, check out this article by the Bay State Banner.

MELAZA
Melaza is a dance theater piece that explores the colonial relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States. The second phase of the work (Descolonizando / Decolonizing Stories) takes a closer look at the situation in Puerto Rico pre, during, and post Huracán María, seen from a decolonizing framework.

Danza Orgánica premiered the first iteration of Melaza I, on October 13-14, 2017, at Hibernian Hall, Roxbury MA. We dedicated the world premiere of Melaza to the survivors of Hurricane Maria. If you'd like to make a contribution towards this cause, click here. The initial part of this work was spearheaded with the support of the Creative Development Residency at Jacob's Pillow. (photograph courtesy of Jacob's Pillow)
